The Lowcountry Although Charleston is known for its rich history and beaches, the shallow marshes and estuaries are filled with our local gold- Redfish. Nothing is more spectacular in nature, than watching a redfish announce his position with a glimmer of sunlight off a wet spotted tail. By poling the skiff silently in as shallow as 5 inches, we give angler, or photographer, the shot of a lifetime. Redfish are found year round throughout Charleston and the surrounding areas. Their habits change with the tides as well as the local weather patterns. We sight fish for them almost daily and have an intimate knowledge of their behaviors and haunts. We generally use 9’ 8wt rods and custom flies tied by the captain. We also have specialized fly tackle when wind or depth challenges occur, such as 11’ single spey rods and short (down to 7’) ‘Saltwater Sixes.’ We also utilize Line Tamer Buckets with swing arms mounted under the casting platform to cure those tangle blues. Everything about our skiff, in fact, is geared towards the fly angler. Obviously, we also take out light tackle spin charters, but our heart is on the fly. During the summer, Charleston’s water temps and bait activity peak the curiosity of some migrating species of fish, such as tarpon, cobia, and jack crevalle as they flood into the local inlets and bays. It’s no shock, we’re right there with them! Loaded for a fight, we head out with 10-12wt rods and wait for the early morning sight of a street gang. What a sight it is!! It often brings panic on the bow to the uninitiated angler when a school of murderous jacks on dawn patrol approaches. If you don’t already, you will soon learn to live for these moments. We are also blessed with a world class lake fishery nearby, In the Santee cooper res. The waters here yield largemouth bass, stripers, various sunfishes, catfish, gar, and carp... all targeted at various times of the year in the shallow water. During early spring, we have an often dynamite Shad run in the local rivers that can bring countless fish to the boat and an ecstatic grin to any angler's face. If it swims and we can throw feathers at it, we can help you catch it. |
